Course Description This course introduces students to modern spoken Korean and to its writing system, Hangeul. It lays the foundations for later Korean language courses.
Learning Outcomes To provide students with a beginner's competency in spoken and written Korean, including the ability to communicate in Korean in basic, everyday situations (asking directions, buying clothes, introducing oneself, talking about family etc.).
Indicative Assessment

Vocabulary quizzes (40%), one spoken test (10%), and two written tests (totaling 50%). Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates but may expect more rigorous assessment and additional assignment work, tailored to the graduate students’ interests.

Other Information

Unless exempted by the Graduate Program Convener, all graduate students must enrol concurrently in the course ‘Graduate Language Supplement EAST8023’, which usually includes a written assessment piece of several thousand words.
