Course Subject Latin
Offered in Second Semester, 2011 and Second Semester, 2012
Unit Value 6 units
Course Description

This course introduces students to the study of classical Latin and to the work of the Roman comic writer Plautus, whose plays had a profound influence on the comic writing of Shakespeare and Moliere. The course consists of a series of carefully graded readings from there of Plautus' plays. As students work through these readings they become acquainted with the Roman comic tradition and, at the same time, they are introduced to the fundamental principles that underpin Latin and to a working vocabulary.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the semester students will have encountered approximately 50% of the grammar and syntax required for fluent reading of Latin texts. The vocabulary they have learned will enable them to cope with simple passages of Latin with the aid of a dictionary.
Indicative Assessment To ensure that students understand the grammatical principles that they are learning, and that they can apply them, they will complete a number of short exercises in class and a weekly assignment for assessment (30%). A brief weekly test (10%) will monitor acquisition of vocabulary. A mid-semester test (15%) and a final examination (45%) will monitor progress.
Workload Four hours in class; four to five further hours of out of class
