| Course Description |
This course will focus on the theory and practice of language teaching. It will investigate key areas of linguistic and applied linguistic theory pertinent to language teaching in areas such as principles of language learning, learning styles and language teaching methodology as well as the effects of specific teachers' views of language, culture and what makes teaching effective. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their learning experiences and to develop their own approach to language teaching. |
| Learning Outcomes |
Students will have gained insight into the complex nature of language teaching and be able to identify a range of factors affecting its success in key areas such as principles of language learning, learning styles and language teaching methodology as well as the effects of specific teachers views of language, culture and what makes teaching effective. Students will be able to systematically observe and analyse language teaching as well as reflect on their own developing teaching approach in terms of these factors. At the end of the course students will have given a short language lesson with comments, which demonstrates their own approach to language teaching and their ability to articulate its main features. |

two 1500-1800 word written assignments (50%), teaching rationale (10%), teaching demonstration (15%), one 2500 word learning journal (25%) |
| Workload |
In addition to the contact hours, students will be expected to spend an average of 5 hours per week reading and reflecting, writing learning journal entries, completing assignments and preparing for their teaching demonstrations. |

| Requisite Statement |
LING1001/2001 Introduction to the Study of Language and a further 6 units from Linguistics (one LING course). Some proficiency in a second language is useful. This course is also open to second or third-year students majoring in a European, Classical or Asian language. |
