Course Description

This course aims to provide an overview of the theories and practices of management in organisational contexts. Specific issues covered include the history of management thought, management roles, management functions, planning and strategy, organisation structure and design, control, and process improvement in organisations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of MPO, students will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of various management models and frameworks, their foundations, strengths and weaknesses;
  • Understand the principles and practices of management and specifically the nature of managerial functions, roles and skills;
  • Recognise the dynamic, complex and interdependent nature of managerial work;
  • Apply theoretical models and concepts to current management practices, problems and issues;
  • Be aware of the major environmental/social pressures and challenges facing managers today
Indicative Assessment

The assessment for this course for Summer School, 2010, will be different from the standard semester offerings. Summer School proposed assessment is as follows:

Class Participation - 10%

Group Case Study Presentation - 15%

Individual Essay - 30%

Final Examination - 45%

Workload

At least three contact hours per week.
