This course introduces students to techniques required to search for, critically evaluate, summarise, and cite literature, and to effectively structure reports. Students will also learn the appropriate specialised vocabulary to describe their microscope work. Skills will be honed through practise in synopsis writing, and authoring short reports describing real experimental data.

This course will conveyed to students entirely online via Skype. 

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to: 

1. Locate appropriate published resources and to effectively extract information from them;

2. Integrate this information in their own research; and

3. Create well structured and cogent accounts of their own microscope studies in high quality English. 

The assessable assignments will include:

1. A summary of a scientific paper (10%);

2. A literature search and survey (10%);

3. A critical review and commentary on professional literature (40%); and

4. A written report and oral presentation on an aspect of their own work (40%).

Peer review by colleagues will be a component of this course.

This course will consist of 12 hours of lectures, written assignments and tutorial discussion.  

Prerequisite is at least a Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience at the discretion of the Program Convener. Completion of at least 18 units in MICR, 8000 level courses in the first semester, including MICR8000, is required to enrol in this course. MICR8611 is a co-requisite; there are no incompatible courses.
