Course Description This course provides an introduction to the pronunciation and interpretation of sung German. The course develops each singer's ability to prepare German vocal music for performance using a variety of resources including IPA transcriptions, word-for-word translations and audio recordings of spoken and sung German. 
Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Demonstrate a basic understanding of the principles and practice of German pronunciation in vocal repertoire Demonstrate a knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet as it relates to the pronunciation of German; Identify simple grammatical structures; Demonstrate proficiency in the pronunciation of German through the performance of a range of German vocal repertoire
Indicative Assessment Attendance required at 85% of classes for successful completion.  Weekly in-class assessment of IPA symbols and transcription Song text recitation (spoken)(50%), 2 Vocal (sung) performances of German repertoire (2x25%).
Workload

13 one-hour lectures, 13 tutorials with piano accompaniment.
