Course Description

This course of study aims to provide musicians with basic information concerning teaching methods and performance techniques for the musical instruments of the percussion family. A special emphasis also includes information for composition and arranging students. This is a “Hands On” course, students will garner an in depth introduction to snare drum, keyboard percussion and timpani.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Analyze and internalize current trends in percussion pedagogical theories.
2. Use specific educational examples and theories to explain key concepts, themes and theories in percussion pedagogy.
3. Think, write and argue with these key concepts, themes and theories.
4. Reflect on and discuss their own learning as it relates to the subject matter of the course.

Indicative Assessment

Mid term performance assessment 40%  Mid-term online exam,  20% 

Final written Examination 30% 

Percussion concert performance written critique 10% 

A passing grade is required in both the examination and assignment components

Workload

Class contact, 1.5 hours, Outside preparation 1 - 3 hours per week.

Recommended Courses

Basic musicianship theory, A.M.E.B. grade 3, ability to read notated music.
