| Course Description | This is a project-based course that is designed to expand and extend students' research skills and incorporates a wide and diverse range of skill sets needed for the researcher in the modern world. The course covers a wide range of research activities and is very relevant to both traditional and contemporary modes of undertaking research. The course has a focus on online research, archives and databases, oral history, interview techniques, good academic writing, presentation skills, and legal issues. All of these skills will be taught through a project giving students a practical application in their learning. |
| Learning Outcomes |
Students will learn to: 1. Identify key methodological and philosophical issues arising from the use of archives, databases, and collections of primary sources for music research 2. Synthesise and evaluate primary and secondary material in relation to a major research project 3. Recognise legal issues around copyright particularly relevant to the music researcher 4. Articulate the ways in which performance and performers can draw out the processes of musical production and response - with an emphasis on acts as well as texts 4. Recognise key ethical issues in undertaking oral history interviews 5. Produce presentations and lecture-recitals that are articulate, coherent and professional |

Attendance required at 85% of classes for successful completion. |
| Workload |
This course will be delivered as a combination of lectures and seminars, or as practical supervised archival work at various cultural institutions in Canberra such as the NLA (National Library of Australia) or the NFSA (National Film and Sound Archive). This course may be delivered as a block intensive. |
