Course Description

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to a selection of key thinkers of the Twentieth Century, drawn from both the ?analytical? and the ?Continental? traditions in philosophy. Our intention is to provide information about, and some insights into the ideas of, a number of thinkers to whom students may have heard reference made in other courses, or in other contexts. Those whom we are planning to cover initially include: Russell, Wittgenstein, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Foucault, Derrida, Popper, Kuhn, Feyerabend, Quine, and Habermas, and lectures on the different figures will be given by members of staff with a particular interest in their work.

Indicative Assessment

Two 2,000 word essays (40% each), hand-ins prior to each tutorial (10%) tutorial participation (10%)

Workload 20 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials
