Course Description

Each student will have a supervisor from the ANU and a teacher in a secondary school. Students will meet with the teacher to discuss the lesson with the secondary students for the next week and be allocated tasks to assist the teacher. Students will decide by the second week of semester an area for which they will prepare curriculum materials based on previous learning at ANU and/or concurrent research. Students will assist in the delivery of this material by the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. prepare curriculum material on science or mathematics topics at an appropriate level for Y11/12 students in the ACT schools system, in a way that will engage the school students' interest
2. present, or assist with presenting, this material to secondary students in an online environment.
Indicative Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

  • Participation on time and each week at the classes (10%; LO 1, 2)
  • Development of up to 5000 words of curriculum material documented ready for online access, as required for ACT Year 11 and 12 education system (60%; LO 1)
  • Assessment of the contribution made to the secondary students' learning through presentations, interactions, effectiveness as a role model (30%, assessed by teacher and individually assigned academic mentor; LO 2)
Workload

One 3 hour session with teacher and secondary students per week; 4 consultations with ANU supervisor

Requisite Statement

Requires previous (successful) or current enrolment in at least 2 third year courses in mathematics, physics or chemistry.
