Course Description

An on-campus course that will give candidates the opportunity to have hands-on research experience in a chosen discipline area based within the College of Medicine, Biology & Environment and College of Physical & Mathematical Sciences.

Candidates will become attached to a working research group and will be supervised during the placement by members of the academic staff of the University. While practical research at the bench or in the field is not specifically excluded it seems more likely that candidates for the degree will not have the necessary time available to complete a specific and delineated project. Rather, they will be free to explore the breadth and depth of developments in their chosen area under close supervision and to interact on a daily working basis with practising scientists at the cutting edge of evolving scientific discovery.

Importantly, this placement will involve:

  • A guided course of preparatory reading in the chosen area of science set by the principal designated supervisor prior to coming on placement and facilitated by e-mail contact
  • As an assessable outcome, a major project report either in written or web format which takes the research experience and translates it into a set of class-room exercises in science education which the candidate (and others) can use in teaching practice.
