VCUG2002 Leadership and Influence in a Complex World

Course Description

The course aims at giving ANU student who have demonstrated or shown potential as leaders and/or influencers a wide understanding of styles of leadership and influence.  In line with the interdisciplinary and peer-learning ethos of Vice-Chancellor's courses students will be exposed to the varying perspectives different disciplines and individuals have on leadership and influence. VCUG2002 aims to bring students together early in their degree and use peer learning strategies to allow students to share their varying experiences and perspectives on leadership.

 

Enrolment process

Interested students need to register an expression of interest on line by 4 July 2011.  Your application will be assessed and the outcome will be announced after 11 July 2011.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Deep understanding of different disciplinary and cultural perspectives on leadership and influence
  2. Greater self awareness of capacity to lead and influence others
  3. Enhanced skills in working in teams including facilitating learning in others
  4. Enhanced oral and written communication skills
Indicative Assessment
  • Essay on what disciplines that you are unfamiliar with have to offer on understanding effective leadership/influencing.  - 30%
  • Individual presentations (after support sessions in effective public speaking and content from guest lecturers on the importance of good communication skills to be an effective leader/influencer) on:

a) Early on in the course on your own leadership/influencing experiences and the traits of great leaders/influencers that you admire - be they political figures, inventors, business or community based leaders.  - 15%

b) At the end of the course on what you have learnt in the course about leadership/influencing others. - 15% 

Workload

One 3 hour session a week (in 2011 this is 9-12 on Friday in Forestry room 102 and 7 hours of independent study a week.
