Since Hindi is the official language of India and over the past 800 years has produced a rich, vigorous and highly developed literary tradition there, a knowledge of Hindi is essential for those interested in any aspect of the civilisation and society of modern and medieval India. Hindi also has an international presence because of the extensive migration of Hindi-speaking people to countries like Fiji, Mauritius and Suriname
The aim of the Hindi program is to provide the ability both to communicate in spoken Hindi and to read a wide range of material, encompassing novels, newspapers, magazines, advertisements and scholarly works, written in Hindi. The emphasis in Hindi 1A and B is on the mastery of the fundamentals of conversational and written Hindi. The Hindi 2A, B, C and D courses, which may be taken in any order, are centred on the reading of a variety of original, unedited texts and the viewing of a selection of films with discussion of those materials in Hindi. These courses are conducted as far as possible in Hindi and students are encouraged to produce their own short plays and other compositions in Hindi.
Since Urdu, an official language of Pakistan and an important language of culture and government in India, is grammatically the same as Hindi, students can include courses in Urdu as a part of their Hindi major.
Supplementary Hindi courses are available from time to time and summer intensive courses like Hindi 2A-B In-country are offered every year by Hindi program staff members in India. Students who achieve a high level of proficiency are eligible to enrol in the Year-in-India course in order to spend their third year of study of Hindi at a university college or similar institution in India.
A full range of Hindi study materials at introductory and advanced levels is available on the Hindi program website.
