Description:

This minor equips students to meet the challenges associated with biodiversity conservation and management and conservation biology. Relevant courses address elements from theoretical to practical, and from qualitative to quantitative, and emphasise field-based learning and solving topical environmental problems with a focus on biodiversity.

Learning Goals:

On completing the minor in Biodiversity Conservation and Management, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Understand patterns of biodiversity and the scientific principles that underpin its conservation and management at a range of scales.
  2. Apply the wide range of tools employed by biologists and land managers, including literature reviews, field surveys, analysis of theory, and analysis of data.
  3. Understand the social, economic, legal and political frameworks under which biodiversity conservation and management must operate.
  4. Understand and apply strategies for the maintenance of biodiversity and the management and restoration of modified landscapes.
  5. Synthesise data and other information related to biodiversity conservation and management and communicate this in appropriate ways, and
  6. Identify potential career paths in biodiversity conservation and management.

Requirements

This minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must include:

6 to 12 units of courses chosen from:

BIOL1009  Diversity of Life

BIOL3206  Evolution of Biodiversity

A maximum of 18 units of 3000 level courses including:

  • 6 to 12 units of courses chosen from:

ENVS3014  Ecological Restoration and Management

ENVS3039  Biodiversity Conservation in Modified Landscapes

  • A maximum of 6 units of courses chosen from:

ENVS3008  Fire in the Environment

ENVS3041  Managing Forested Landscapes

  • 6 units of courses chosen from:

ENVS3028  Environmental Policy

ENVS3033  International Environmental Policy

LAWS3103  Law and the Environment

Advice to Students:

Science students undertaking this minor in a combined degree will be restricted to courses offered or approved by Science.
