The Bachelor of Economics degree offers students rigorous training in economic analysis with applications to a wide variety of topical issues. It is an intellectually challenging degree that offers insight into the ways that households and individuals make decisions and interact, the ways that businesses are structured and compete, and the role of government in economic activity.
Whislt at the ANU Economics graduates acquire problem solving skills that are valued by government and business employers. The three-year degree has two sequences that run through it - the core economics sequence that consists of semester length microeconomics and macroeconomics courses in each of the three years, and a second sequence that consists of two semester courses in quantitative methods in the first year, a course in econometrics normally taken at second year and three elective courses drawn from a list of optional semester courses that provide a wide variety of applications.
The degree gives students insight into what determines economic outcomes as a basis for examining a variety of economic policy issues. Analytical training provides the tools used to examine a range of economic issues. Examples include problems of unemployment and inflation, policy and project evaluation using a cost-benefit analysis, the impact of monopoly power and regulation, the impact of foreign trade, and public intervention to deal with problems of environmental pollution. The core courses emphasise an analytical approach to the discipline.
To obtain the degree students complete 144 units of courses typically taken over three years of equivalent full-time study. Generally, a semester length course carries a value of six units and, therefore, the degree requires completion of 24 courses based on a pattern of four per full-time semester.
There are four components to the degree:
- Economics sequence
- Second sequence
- Economic history requirement
- Electives
Students undertaking the EDUC plan will undertake the appropriate electives in order to meet the requirements of the Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary Teaching) at the University of Canberra. Further information is available from the College office.
