Graduate Diploma in Science Communication
Degree Structure
The Graduate Diploma in Scientific Communication is unlike any other academic program. Scholars encounter many varied challenges throughout the year. An informal atmosphere is maintained and it is important that scholars remain flexible and highly committed. Course work sessions are run both at Questacon and the Australian National University and specialist presenters from different organisations are often used. Sometimes the work and interaction with the other scholars is intense; at other times, scholars will be expected to work to their own schedule. The program gives scholars the opportunity to sample a diversity of careers at the interface of science and the community.
Course work is divided into separate modules. Course work units consist of Mass Media and Applied Research Project. There is also the field component (Shell Questacon Science Circus tours) and a student placement program. Further course work is given in preparation for the field component. The Shell Questacon Science Circus is an outreach program of Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre. Scholars staff the Science Circus as it tours to regional areas of Australia for about 18-20 weeks each year. Involvement with the Science Circus' hands-on public exhibition and science show performances provides a large part of the practical training in science communication.
Course work and other training include the following:
• public speaking, presentation and media skills;
• experience in exhibition design and communication research;
• team work strategies;
• special communication skills to present science and technology to students from kindergarten to year 12 and culturally diverse and geographically isolated communities;
• public relations and promotional skills.
In short, the program provides opportunities to test your initiative, challenge your creativity and extend your horizons!
