Degree Structure

Candidates are required to complete 72 units in two parts, each being 36 units.

In Part A the candidate is required to complete 36 units consisting of six, 6-unit courses of coursework. Of these, four are compulsory (see list of Part A compulsory courses) and two are selected from the list of elective courses (see list of elective courses). 

With permission of the Graduate Convener, relevant linguistics or applied linguistics courses offered at graduate level (see the list of Additional Courses) may be substituted for any elective course. If for some reason compulsory courses are not offered in any one year, substitute courses will be arranged.

Part B comprises a further 36 units.   This is a year long course. Students will complete a sub-thesis of 20,000 - 25,000 words (24 units), as well as two research orientated courses:   LING6509 Research Design in (Applied) Linguistics (6 units), and LING8003 Readings in Applied Linguistics (6 units).
