This program offers a flexible platform for those wishing to develop breadth in environmental science and resource management, or depth in specific aspects. The scope of this program is broad, reflecting the Australian National University's diverse strengths in the environmental sciences and their applications. The flexibility of course requirements for the degree allows programs to be structured to meet individual interests; all students are required to develop expertise in a nominated area through independent research and completion of a dissertation.
Master of Science (Environmental Science) (Research) graduates can expect to:
• gain both a broad knowledge base about contemporary issues and challenges in environment and sustainability, and a high level of knowledge of a specific topic reflecting their interests,
• develop their independent learning, analytical and research, teamwork, and oral and written communication skills;
• have better developed networks relevant to their academic and professional interests;
• be better placed to respond to the challenges of environment and sustainability through their chosen careers; and
• have completed appropriate research training for entry to the PhD.
Please note that all applicants for the Master of Science (Environmental Science) (Research) need to include two professional referee reports with their application.
Admission Requirements
A three-year undergraduate degree with an average of 75% in at least half of later-year courses, or a fourth-year Honours degree with a grade of at least 70%, from an Australian university; or the equivalent from another university.
Students must maintain an average of at least 70% in 36 of the 48 units of the Coursework component to continue to the Research component. The choice of research topic depends upon the availability and agreement of an appropriate supervisor. Students who have not met this requirement may opt to exit with a Master of Science (Environmental Science) degree.
