Course Description

A study of aspects of the art and architecture of the Roman Empire from the time of Augustus to the sixth century AD. Topics will include historical and funerary monuments, urban planning and amenities, especially in Rome, Pompeii and Ostia, but also in the provinces, and the foundation of Constantinople. A range of sculpture, silver and coinage, frescoes and mosaics, manuscripts and textiles will be studied in their social and religious context, including early Christianity. Particular attention will be paid to technological innovations, ancient treatises and literary sources, and modern approaches to the subject.

Indicative Assessment

2,000 word essay (40%), Eight minute class presentation (25%) and 1,000 word take-home visual paper (35%).

Workload

Two hours of lectures per week and a weekly tutorial.
