Course Description

This course is designed for those that have a particular interest in learning Ceramics through the study of traditional processes and societies. It is suitable for students of visual arts, curatorial studies, archaeology and anthropology who are interested in broadening their understanding of visual culture. Basic wheel forming techniques and glaze technologies such as traditional slipware, alkaline glazes and reduction fired stoneware will be introduced with an emphasis on the historical context within which these developed. Students will be encouraged to develop designs that are a reflection of these traditions but made within a contemporary context. Occupation Health and Safety instruction is included.

Note: Places in this course are limited. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to

  1. demonstrate an understanding of basic wheel techniques, processes and equipment used in ceramics
  2. show a creative exploration of materials and designs through the making of ceramic objects
  3. show an awareness and understanding of the historical and theoretical contexts relevant to the course
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) [LOs 1 – 3]

and Documentation (20%). [LOs 1 – 3]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice and other research.
