Course Description

In Painting 5 each student develops an individual creative project and is encouraged to build painting skills and explore methods and processes appropriate to their chosen theme. Individual work develops over the semester in response to discussion with staff and peers, emphasizing creative, critical and reflective thinking. Drawing continues both as an adjunct to painting and as a creative form in itself. Studio theory surveys the international contemporary field and emphasizes the skills of pictorial analysis and interpretation. Student presentations foster each student's ability to articulate a contextual framework for their developing practice. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to

  1. demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the processes, terminology, forms and materials of painting.
  2. apply appropriate skills and knowledge to develop and articulate an individual studio project
  3. experiment with concepts, objectives and appropriate, working processes by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively.
  4. work independently in a workshop environment in response to project demands.
  5. reflect on social, ethical, cultural, technological and environmental issues of creative practice considering local and international perspectives.
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LOs 1, 2, 4]

Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%). [LOs 1 and 3, 5]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

12 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.
