For further information, see http://adsri.anu.edu.au/study/Courses/DEMO8002.php * Please note this course is not offered in 2009 Population policy, a subset of public policy, is concerned with envisioning and assessing alternative demographic futures. The implementation of policy reqyires the modification of demographic processes to achieve more desirable social outcomes. Population planning, a subset of social, economic, or environmental planning, is often used in the implementation and evaluation of population policies. This course will explore the rationale, design, efficacy, politics, and ethics of population policies, and discuss selected issues of population planning. Fertility and migration will be the main demographic processes of interest, though some attention will also be paid to mortality issues such as HIV/AIDS and prevention of pandemics. The material covered will refer to both developed countries, where feasible treating generic issues that span both. The course aims to provide a theoretical and comparative basis for critical analysis of population policy and familiarity with past and present political debates on policy issues.
