Course Description

Sources and classification of law; professional engineering legislation, code of ethics, registration and discipline; negligence; contract law; employment law; patent law and submission; environmental law.
Introduction to intellectual property. What is intellectual property? Enforcement of rights. Copyright, trademarks, designs and patents. Intellectual property management.
Commercialising intellectual property. University policy and practice and students' rights. Legal aspects of the Internet and electronic commerce.

Learning Outcomes

The course is designed with 3 main aims for students to:

  • recognise and deal with basic legal issues arising in professional practice and business
  • know when to get professional legal advice and how to use lawyers effectively
  • supplement ethical framework - see http://www.onlineethics.org
Indicative Assessment

Attendance (10%); Assignment (10%); Practice examination (20%); Final exam (60%).

Workload

13 weeks of lectures, 2 hours each. One assignment, 500 words. Revision as necessary.
