Course Description

This course introduces students to the study of Ancient Greek. It consists of a series of carefully graded readings drawn (for the most part in modified form) from the writers of the Greek world, including Aristophanes and Plato. As students work through these readings they are introduced to the fundamental grammatical principles that underpin Greek and to a basic working vocabulary in Greek.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the semester students will have learned approximately 50% of the grammar and syntax required for fluent reading of Ancient Greek texts. The vocabulary they have learned will enable them to cope with simple passages of Ancient Greek with the aid of a dictionary.
Indicative Assessment

A final three-hour examination (50%) and tests (25%) and exercises done throughout the semester (25%).

Workload

Four one-hour meetings and six hours of associated study time per week.

Requisite Statement

CLAS1001 Traditional Grammar or CLAS2011 Traditional Grammar (L) or permission of Convener.
