| Course Description |
This course introduces students to the study of Ancient Greek. It consists of a series of carefully graded readings drawn (for the most part in modified form) from the writers of the Greek world, including Aristophanes and Plato. As students work through these readings they are introduced to the fundamental grammatical principles that underpin Greek and to a basic working vocabulary in Greek. |
| Learning Outcomes | By the end of the semester students will have learned approximately 50% of the grammar and syntax required for fluent reading of Ancient Greek texts. The vocabulary they have learned will enable them to cope with simple passages of Ancient Greek with the aid of a dictionary. |
| Indicative Assessment | To ensure that students understand the grammatical principles that they are learning, and that they can apply them, they will complete a number of short exercises in class and a weekly assignment for assessment (30%). A brief weekly test (10%) will monitor acquisition of vocabulary. A mid-semester test (15%) and a final three-hour examination (45%) will monitor progress. |
