Course Description

Advanced Improvisation 2 develops the student's practical ability in improvisation, informed by theoretical, aural, historical, cultural and stylistic concepts. It deepens the student's understanding of structure within improvised music and the historical and cultural contexts which affected its development. Emphasis is placed upon developing the student's melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic skills in improvisation on advanced harmonic and rhythmic settings. Emphasis is also placed on the students ability to accurately transcribe and analyse complex improvisations from sound recordings and live performances.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you should be able to demonstrate:
1. A high level knowledge of improvisation techniques in a variety of harmonic and rhythmic settings and forms.
2. A high level application of these techniques to your chosen instrument.

Indicative Assessment

Precise details of assessment requirements and criteria vary according to the nature of the instrument/ voice and the needs of the student, but typically consist of:

  • Midterm performance exam 30% ( learning outcomes 1,2,3)
  • Final Performance exam 40% (learning outcomes 1,2,3)
  • Transcription and written analysis  project 30%( learning outcome 4)

    • 2-hour improvisation lecture/practical
    • 1- hour tutorial/practical
    • 7- hours research and preparation
