This major is only available to students undertaking the Bachelor of Professional Music Practice degree program.

The Professional Music Practice major is the core component of the Bachelor of Professional Music Practice degree.  It will prepare students to become broadly trained music professionals, through giving them a blend of theoretical and conceptual training, and direct, project-based professional experience. This major prepares students who have a desire to study music and for careers in studio teaching, arts administration, festival management, community music administration, event management and a myriad of other music related careers.  This major will provide the training of music professionals who have the skill set necessary to work effectively and flexibly across the music industry.   

 

Learning outcomes

Students completing the Professional Music Practice Major will:

  • interpret, communicate and present ideas, problems and arguments to do with music and the arts in modes suited to a range of audiences and professional contexts;
  • work independently and collaboratively in music, and across the creative and performing arts discipline in response to authentic project demands;
  • apply relevant skills and knowledge to produce and realise musical works, performances, improvisations and other forms of creative expression, individually and collaboratively;
  • recognise and reflect on social, cultural and ethical issues, and apply local and international perspectives to practice in music;
  • have specialized in one or more areas of professional music practice, including arts and music management, instrumental pedagogy, and/or creative recording practice.

Requirements

This major requires the completion of 48 units, which must include:

12 units from the completion of two of the following 1000-level courses:

MUSM1301 - The Complete Musician 1 (6 units)

MUSM1302 - The Complete Musician 2 (6 units)

MUSM1303 - Jazz Harmony, Arranging and Composition 1 (6 units)

MUSM1304 - Jazz Harmony, Arranging and Composition 2 (6 units)

MUSM1306 - Turning Points in Music History (6 units)

MUSM1307 - What Music Means (6 units)

 

12 units from the completion of the following compulsory courses:

MUSM2267 - Writing for the Music Profession 1 (6 units)

MUSM2313 - Music Professional Practice Project (6 units)

 

24 units from the completion of courses from the following list:

MGMT3027 - Entrepreneurship & Innovation (6 units)

MKTG2004 - Marketing (6 units)

MUSM2272 - Writing for the Music Profession 2 (6 units)

MUSM2313 - Music Professional Practice Project (6 units – see below)

MUSM2327 - Recording Techniques 1 (6 units)

MUSM2328 - Recording Techniques 2 (6 units)

MUSM3251 - Music Education Program Professional Practice (6 units)

MUSM3252 - Instrumental Music Education (6 units)

MUSM3254 - Music Recording & Production (6 units)

 

MUSM2313 - Music Professional Practice Project can be taken more than once.
