Course Description

This course builds on knowledge and skills gained in the courses Recording Techniques A & B.

Students will explore sound recording software in detail, focusing on one key industry leader, and comparing that with others to observe similarities and differences. Students will be encouraged to use the full creative potential of these sytems to create , record and produce music. An understanding of the hardware involved will also be gained, together with system optimisation , resource management, workflows and 'housekeeping'.

 

Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire knowledge of computer software and hardware relating to music production and apply that knowledge in a creative way to achieve a desired musical aesthetic.

Students will understand :

1) the Digital Audio Workstation environment and applications
2) Computer workflow management.
3) how to select appropriate sofware and hardware tools, and apply these effectively.
4) Hardware and software optimisation.
5) Students will develope and refine aural cognitive skills and production values.

Indicative Assessment

Attendance required at 85% of classes for successful completion.

1) Weekly tasks focusing on specific areas to determine competency in specific skills. 40% ( learning outcomes 1,2,5 )
2) A major practical assignment applying a digital audio workstation to the task of creating music, recording, editing & mixing, and control of effects devices.   This assignment will also include a brief written report. 60% ( learning outcomes1,2,3,4,5 )

 

Workload

The course will be delivered as weekly 2 hour lectures followed with a one hour tutorial.
