This major is available only to students undertaking the Bachelor of Archaeological Practice degree program.

The major in Archaeological practice is centred on skills in field and laboratory analysis of archaeological materials. Courses provide students with intensive training in finding, recording, excavating and analyzing archaeological sites and the materials found within them. This training involves both practical and theoretical aspects.

Learning outcomes

  1. Development of skills in undertaking archaeological fieldwork, including the techniques and approaches that can be used to locate, map, record, collect and excavate archaeological materials, and the conditions in which different techniques and approaches are optimal.
  2. Development of analytical skills and strategies for the analysis of archaeological materials. This includes the examination of human remains, artefacts, archaeo-fauna and archaeo-flora, archaeological sediments and other materials.
  3. Understanding of interpretative approaches including the application of archaeological theory and quantitative analysis.
  4. Familiarity with designing research in archaeology, including approaches to framing questions, selecting and applying data collection methods, means of developing and presenting arguments and model testing in archaeology.

Requirements

This major requires the completion of 48 units, which must include:

12 units from the completion of the following compulsory courses:

ARCH1111 - Archaeology: Finding treasure and history (6 units)

ARCH1112 - From Origins to Civilizations (6 units)

36 units from completion of courses from the following list:

ARCH2006 - History of Archaeology: Discovering the Past (6 units)

ARCH2017 - Landscape Archaeology (12 units)

ARCH2035 - Decay and disturbance: Archaeological formation processes (6 units)

ARCH2041 - Introduction to Environmental Archaeology (6 units)

ARCH2054 - Archaeology of Death and Mortuary Practices (6 units)

ARCH3000 - Research Design and Analysis in Archaeology (6 units)

ARCH3004A - Archaeological Field and Laboratory Methods A (6 units)

ARCH3004B - Archaeological Field and Laboratory Methods B (6 units)

BIAN3015 - Human Skeletal Analysis (6 units)
