This qualification offers students advanced graduate coursework opportunities in Military Studies. Students are encouraged to develop analytical frameworks for understanding Australia's strategic environment and policy, for integrating operational studies within a wider strategic and policy framework, for setting Australian strategic policy in its historical and political context, and for exploring the concurrent evolution of the nature of war and operational theory. The MSS is suitable for career military officers aspiring to leadership and/or staff appointments at a senior level.

Admission Requirements

Candidates for direct admission into the Master of Military Studies program should normally have obtained at least second class honours, division A, in their Bachelor degree, or the equivalent. In cases where applicants have not undertaken an honours degree, equivalence to a 2A honours degree may be met by:

  • a four-year bachelor degree, a double degree or a graduate diploma; or
  • a degree of Bachelor from an Australian or other recognised University as approved by the delegated authority, with substantial relevant work experience demonstrating a capacity for analysis and research; or
  • Relevant qualifications, practical experience or combination of qualifications and practical experience as deemed equivalent to a 2A honours degree by the delegated authority.

MMilitaryStudies candidates may be eligible to transfer to the GCMS or the GDMS, provided that the Master of Military Studies has not already been awarded. MMilitaryStudies candidates may be eligible to transfer to the MA(Military Studies), provided that the Master of Military Studies has not already been awarded.
