Course Description This course builds on the knowledge and skills provided in ITAL2012. The course continues to develop mastery of Italian opera and music language and culture. The course aims to provide an overview of the development of opera singing, focusing on significant periods and aspects that inspired the composers by analysing a selection of Italian operas in their musical, cultural achievement and social political context .

The course will include use of online interactive resources (e.g., "Cantare l'opera"), materials and assessment.

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. comprehend brief aural and written texts in Italian;
  2. produce phonologically accurate texts presented within their musical, cultural and historical context;
  3. research and write short papers about Italian opera (in english and/or Italian)
Indicative Assessment

1 semester-long project (50%) leading to a composition, a presentation and a performance (singing or poetry recital)
1 voice / pronunciation exercise (15%) 
1 language of opera test (20%)
1 cultural / musical assignment (15%)
(School of Music students may write their assignment in English, whereas students counting the course towards their Italian Major will write it in Italian).

Workload 13 two-hour face-to-face lectures, 13 tutorials and 12 hours of practice (voice with accompaniment) for voice students taught by the school of music in lecture/tutorial.

Co-requisite for BMus (Voice) students: ITAL2012

School of Music students (BMus Voice) will take the course in their first year - no consent is required

The course is not a core Italian language and culture course, therefore it may be taken as an elective or as a thematic option to count towards the Italian major by students of ITAL2005 and ITAL2006 given that the content (grammar of the language of opera, literature and theory) is completely different from what is studied in any Italian language and culture course,  ITAL1002 and ITAL1003; ITAL2005 and ITAL2006; ITAL2007 and ITAL2008.
