Course Description

This course introduces basic literacy skills to students, including academic writing, reading academic literature, understanding academic communication and presenting to an audience.

The course will introduce the concepts of 'audience' in communication and develop communication and literacy skills in a hands-on academic environment.  

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Listen to an academic address and take relevant notes

2. Read an academic text and summarise, paraphrase and apply the information contained.

3. Write a 1000 word essay and report

4. Make a 10 minute academic presentation

5. Understand the conventions of referencing, acknowldegement and plagiarism avoidance.

Indicative Assessment

1. continuous assessment of short pieces of writing and reading on a weekly basis

2. a 1000 word essay

3. a 10 minute presentation

Workload

Students will deveote 15 hours per week in face-to-face and out of class activities for the ten weeks of this course
