EMET8001 Applied micro-econometrics

Course Description

This course goes beyond the simple ordinary least squares regression model. We will cover

  • Brief review of ordinary least squares
  • Instrumental variables estimation
  • Panel data estimation
  • Simultaneous equations models
  • Limited dependent variables models
  • Sample selection models.

The course consists roughly of 2/3 theory and 1/3 applied work.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will know how to

  • work with and develop state of the art models of micro-econometrics
  • use the STATA software package for estimation of these models
  • estimate these models
Indicative Assessment

There will be two compulsory exams (note: subject to change):

  • Midterm exam 1 (40%)
  • Final exam (60%)
Workload 3 contact hours plus private study time.
Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs.

Eligibility At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree with introductory level courses in Economics, Statistics and Econometrics

The software of choice for the applied part is STATA with which you should be familiar.
