Course Description

Entrepreneurship and New Venture Planning introduces students to the process of identifying new business opportunities, researching and writing a business plan around those opportunities. The students also make an oral presentation of their business plan to an examiners’ panel – representing hypothetical investors.  The students also prepare a personal learning report which reviews how the course has added to their understanding of general management issues. The course gives students practice in managing a group project over an extended timeframe and requires them to draw on all of the core disciplines of management – new concept development, marketing, financing, organisational development and strategy. In this way, the course integrates the learning delivered in specialised courses on these and other management disciplines. The course commences with a series of classroom lectures on principals and processes in opportunity identification, entrepreneurship and business planning. The lectures are reinforced with progress workshops where the students review the work they are doing on their plans with a faculty mentor.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of both IBP courses, students should be able to:

  • Apply the skills and knowledge acquired through the MBA to practical management tasks.
  • Develop a comprehensive business plan for a new initiative, whether an entrepreneurial start-up venture or a new business initiative within an established corporation.
  • Work in multi-disciplinary teams, applying critical thinking and problem solving skills to business dilemmas, negotiating, communicating and contributing to the development of a substantial shared project.
  • Understand the interrelation between external market opportunities, internal capabilities and corporate dynamics

  •   Group project  (Total 65%)
    • Write-up of team project scope (business concept)  5%
    • Progress report / workshop  5%
    • Complete written draft of group project report (business plan)  5%
    • Final group project report (business plan)  40%
    • Presentation of group project proposal to panel 10%
  • Individual assessment   (Total 35%)
    • Critique of sample business plan  5%
    • Peer feedback on group participation  10%
    • Personal learning report  20%
  • TOTAL  100%

All components of the above assessment are compulsory and must be submitted.  To achieve an automatic pass grade in this course you must obtain 50% or more as a scaled aggregate mark.

Workload  5 x 4 hour class, 2x 8 hour class(not per week, entire term)

Areas of Interest Management
Eligibility At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree and a minimum of three years professional or managerial work experience.
