Mathematical Economics Major

The major in mathematical economics gives students an opportunity to explore the intimate relationship between mathematics and economics through a program of study which focuses on mathematical analysis, modern statistical techniques and economic theory.

Requirements

This major will consist of a minimum of 42 units of courses including:

(a) STAT2001 Introductory Mathematical Statistics

(b) at least one of:

  • MATH2320 Analysis 1 Honours: Metric Spaces and Application
  • MATH2305 Differential Equations and Applications
  • MATH2405 MathsMethods 1 Honours: Ordinary Differential Equations and Advanced Vector Calculus
  • MATH2501 Foundations of Computational Science

(c) ECON2111 Microeconomics 2 Honours

(d) at least one of:

  • ECON2142 Strategic Thinking: An Introduction to Game Theory Honours
  • EMET2007 Econometric Methods

(e) at least one of:

  • MATH3320 Analysis 2 Honours: Topology, Lebesgue Integration and Hilbert Space
  • MATH3029 Probability Modelling with Applications

(f) at least one of:

(g) at least one of:

  • MATH3325 Analysis 3 Honours: Functional Analysis, Spectral Theory and Application
  • MATH3501 Scientific and Industrial Modelling
  • MATH3511 Scientific Computing
  • MATH3512 Matrix Computations and Optimisation
  • MATH3341 Partial Diff. Equations Honours
  • MATH3342 Differential Geometry Honours
  • MATH3344 Algebraic Topology Honours

First Year course advice:

Students should take MATH1115 and MATH1116.
