Course Description

This intensively-delivered course is designed to introduce students engaged in practice-led research to the principles of exegetical writing. It aims to provide students in the creative arts with the practical skills to structure and develop their exegesis. The course will  address the specific issues entailed in the writing of a document designed to critically reflect on a body of practical work, outlining a variety of strategies and models for experimenting with voice, structure and content.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Experiment with different modes and voices for writing about practice
  2. Evaluate other’s writing about practice
  3. Evaluate and explore ways of writing about material, process and/or performance
  4. Apply course material to the writing of an exegesis
Indicative Assessment

 

  1. Participation                                                         20% (outcomes 1-4)
  2. Experimental writing: 4 -5000wds                            50% (outcomes 1, 3, 4)
  3. Audio/visual presentation with written script: max 1000wds 30% (outcomes 1, 3, 4)
Workload

Five 6-hour days attendance at intensive classes and a further 18 hours of directed preparatory reading and preparation and up to 70 hours of independent private study/research.

Requisite Statement

This course is a Core course for graduate coursework students at Masters level in the Schools of Art and an elective coursework option for HDR students from 2012.

Recommended Courses

Students will need to have experience of studio - or equivalent performance-based practice involving critical analysis and reflection.
