Course Description This course introduces students to different disciplinary approaches to the study of Southeast Asia. Taught by a team of historians, political scientists, anthropologists, economists, international relations experts and other research staff from the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, it covers both mainland and archipelagic Southeast Asia. Students will be introduced to key trends, controversies and debates on various topics in the study of Southeast Asian societies, including long-term patterns of historical continuity and change, authoritarianism and democracy, economic development and crisis, and the place of religion.
Learning Outcomes
This course will provide students with a broad and introductory perspective
on Southeast Asia, both in geographical and disciplinary terms. Students
will become familiar with some of the key debates and approaches that
animate contemporary research on Southeast Asia in different disciplines,
and so gain a foundation for more specialised study of Southeast Asian
societies at more advanced levels.


Indicative Assessment Tutorial participation 10%, tutorial presentation 10%, 1000-word tutorial paper 15%, two-hour closed book exam 30%, 3,000-word essay 35%
