Course Description

The course introduces key theoretical concepts in international relations that can be used to explain and understand Japan's contemporary foreign policy. Issues to be examined include the effect of domestic political and social change in Japan on foreign policy; the future of the US-Japan security alliance; the changing role of the Self-Defense Forces; Overseas Development Assistance in Asia; the growing importance of public diplomacy; and how Japan handles historical issues with its neighbours.

Indicative Assessment

Tutorial attendance and participation (20%), Essay (40%), Final exam or second essay (40%).

Required Skills
A knowledge of either modern Japanese history or international politics. Prior completion of any of ASIA2009, ASIA2029 or ASIA2031 is advisable.
