| Course Description |
This course is for students who have an interest in the traditions and practices of East Asian arts. It provides a general introduction to modern and contemporary arts in Taiwan, such as visual art, cinema, performance art, and popular culture. It also reflects how this Asian community has absorbed different cultures (Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch, Korean and American) to create a unique culture under the impact of globalisation. |
| Learning Outcomes |
Understand the historical development of Taiwanese arts; demonstrate understanding of issues in the arts of modern Taiwan; explore different forms of Taiwanese art; integrate relevant knowledge into practical activities such as appreciation, discussion and comparison; acquire theoretical resources about modern Taiwanese art. |

The final assessment scheme will be determined after consultation with the class. Weekly tutorial questions submitted to Tutor (10 best counted) 15% Tutorial and workshop participation 10% 2 tutorial papers (min. 1000 words each; one per term), 15% each 30% Research Essay (3,500 words or 5,000 for graduate students) 45% |
| Workload |
The course will consist of two lectures and a tutorial each week, for thirteen weeks. Students will be expected to study about five hours at home each week. |
