MICR8900 Special Project in Microscopy

Course Description

A project will be proposed by each student for evaluation by coordinators and peers. This project will demonstrate techniques learnt in earlier MICR courses including experimental design, specimen preparation, instrument operation, data interpretation, and report writing.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to: 

1. Choose a practicable and productive research project;

2. Improve project design on the basis of feedback, planning;

3. Implement the project; and

4. Present research outcomes in written and oral form. 

Indicative Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

1. A mid-term review (20%);

2. An oral presentation (20%); and

3. A final report (60%). 

Workload

This course will require nine weeks of full time work (ie >40 hours per week).

Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs.
Requisite Statement

Prerequisite is at least a Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience at the discretion of the Program Convener. Completion of at least 18 units in MICR, 8000 level courses in the first semester, including MICR8000, is required to enrol in this course. MICR8510 and MICR8611 are corequisites; there are no incompatible courses.

Technology Requirements

Students must have access to computers with fast internet connection, webcams, and Skype in order to access remote learning resources. Access to transmission and/or scanning electron microscopes may be required depending on the student’s chosen research project.
