| Course Description |
The Special Topic is designed to showcase a new area of teaching and to allow students to learn from visiting specialists at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. In 2011 the Special Topic will be a course on Strategy in Action: The Development of the Operational Art, taught by Dr Garth Pratten. |
| Learning Outcomes |
On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will have a sound understanding of the operational level of war and its relationship with both strategy and tactics; the origins of contemporary theories guiding the conduct of military operations; and the physical, technological, intellectual and geographic factors that play a role in shaping the planning of operations and determining their outcomes. The course will also develop students’ abilities to critically evaluate historical evidence, analyse the conduct of military operations, and express the results clearly and eloquently in a variety of formats. |

| Workload |
Students undertaking this course could expect a workload of 10 hours a week. This is inclusive of actual contact hours for lectures and also out of class preparation time. |
