Natural Resource Management Major

Add Natural Resource Management to my interest list
Offered By ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment and ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences
Academic Contact Dr John Field
Areas of Interest Environmental Studies, Geography, and Resource Management and Environmental Science

Environmental scientists and natural resource managers need to understand the nature and context of the resources to be managed, particularly if that management is to lead to sustainability. The major links the natural and social sciences with their applications in environmental conservation and sustainable resource management. A core of natural and social sciences courses relevant to environmental conservation and sustainable resource management deal with the underlying issues of describing resources, the context and the stakeholders, allowing an emphasis to be then placed on a wide range of actual resources. Each area focused upon emphasises experiential and field based learning, and combines broadly based environmental education with focused professional development and opportunities for specialisation.

This major provides the opportunity to develop the experience and skills to:

  • evaluate current understandings of the science of natural resource management and a range of response strategies to make the management sustainable;
  • integrate knowledge relevant to the scientific areas and the policies across disciplines;
  • apply a range of written, oral and visual communication skills to effectively convey and discuss information about each resource and management decision and relevant policy in multidisciplinary contexts; and
  • engage with the ongoing debates on environmental and resource management issues, recognising the biophysical and socio-political and cultural contexts of the debate.
