Program Requirements

The program structure is two-years of postgraduate coursework and research. 

Coursework:  Students are required to maintain a 70% grade average of 48 units in the coursework comprising:

a)  12 units of compulsory courses: 

  • CHEM8004 - Research Proposal in Chemistry (6 units) &
  • CHEM8003 - Graduate Research Project in Chemistry (6 units)  

(b)  36 units of electives courses to be chosen from: 

  • CHEM8024 - Environmental Chemistry - on-line 6 unit course
  • CHEM6001 - Applied Spectroscopy - on-line 3 unit course
  • CHEM6011 - Medicinal Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM6013 - Techniques in Organic and Biological Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM6021 - Physical Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM6023 - Physical Aspects of Inorganic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM6031 - Organometallic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM8023 - Chemistry in the Pharmaceutical Industry - on-line 6 unit course
  • CHEM6006 - Materials Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM6012 - Topics in Biological & Organic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM6022 - Spectroscopic Techniques in Biophysical Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM6032 - Topics in Modern Inorganic Chemistry (3 units)
  • CHEM6041 - Structural Biology for Chemists (3 units)
  • CHEM8001 - Special Topics in Chemistry (3 to 24 units)
  • Other courses by arrangement with the graduate program convener in chemistry 

Research:  Students who maintain the 70% grade average in their coursework continue to complete 48 units of research (24 units of CHEM8003 in both semester 1 and 2). The second year principally involves a research project conducted under supervision, with the major item of assessment being a thesis (50%). Assessment also includes postgraduate coursework (30%), research seminar (10%) and thesis defence (10%).
