Course Description

This course will provide an introduction to the structure, functions and processes of the Australia's Defence Organisation. It aims to provide students with information and insights which will allow them to understand and work within the organisation more effectively, and contribute constructively to its further development. Specific content will include: history of the ADO, leadership in the ADO, financial management, capability development and acquisition processes and problems,  comparisons and benchmarking, and reform agendas past and present.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the major issues concerning defence management and administration in Australia.
  2. Understand the current challenges and future issues in Australian defence management and administration.
  3. Understand options for improving defence management and administration.
  4. Conduct research on key issues of defence management and administration . 
  5. Express themselves clearly and eloquently in a variety of formats, including verbal and written.
  6. Function effectively as part of a small group.
Indicative Assessment

Student Participation (10%), Short Assignment (20%), Reflective Journal (30%), Take-home Examination (40%)

Workload

Students undertaking this course could expect a workload of 10 hours per week.  This is inclusive of actual contact hours for lectures and also out of class preparation time.
