The course aims to improve practical skill in translation from Indonesian into English along with knowledge of translation principles. It deals with a wide range of texts from literature and the print media. Classes involve a good deal of work in small groups or pairs, mainly identifying translation problems and comparing and evaluating solutions. As well as preparing translations of their own, students will criticise published translations.

A separate component of the course is a guided translation project. With the aid of individual meetings with the course lecturer, students produce a more in-depth written analysis of either a translation of their own or a published translation.

Two x 2,400-word take-home assignments consisting of own translation + commentary on it (total 50%); two class tests  (total 10%), a final 3,000-word guided project with choice between own translation plus commentary on it or criticism of a published translation (40%)

• participation in two hour-long classes on campus a week for eight weeks.

• preparation (approx. two hours) for each hour-long class on campus

• two take-home 2,400-word assignments (own translation + commentary on it)

• one 3,000-word guided project (either own translation + commentary on it or criticism of a published translation)

Entry is by permission of coordinator. Students would normally be enrolled in the Master of Translation.

Students are assumed to have a good reading knowledge of modern Indonesian (equivalent to completion of an undergraduate major in Indonesian at Distinction level).

No prior knowledge of translation principles is assumed. However, prior completion of either LANG6001 Translation Across Languages: Literary Texts or LANG6002 Translation Across Languages: Specialised Material would be helpful.

All essential materials will be provided in electronic format on the course website.

Access to internet and access to printer to print out own copy of set materials for each class during Weeks 1-8.
