Course Description

This is a supervised dissertation, involving no program of lectures. In consultation with the supervisor, students may select a topic of their choice from any area in the field of Translation Studies which is within the competence of the supervisory staff. The completed dissertation will be c. 15,000 words in length.

A dissertation is a compulsory component of the Master of Translation Studies. Students in second year of that program have the option of combining LANG6019 with LANG6017 (Translation Project, 18 units) or other coursework to the value of 18 units, or of undertaking a longer dissertation (LANG6021, worth 36 units) without additional components.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will have:

  1. enhanced their research skills and gained a heightened appreciation of the complex linguistic and cultural problems which form part of the process.
  2. developed important analytical skills under the guidance of staff members who are themselves highly skilled and experienced translators from a range of languages, and who are contributing to the most recent scholarship in Translation Studies.

Workload

There are no formal lectures for this course. Contact hours with supervisor weekly or as needed. Private study may be expected to be in the range of 8-10 hours per week over two semesters.
