A basic knowledge of the workings of language can be a useful adjunct to many areas of study, including any foreign language, literature, anthropology, philosophy, computer science, or psychology.  This minor builds on the introduction to linguistics (1001), which may be taken on its own are as part of another major or minor, to allow further study of some of the sub-areas of linguistics.

 

Learning outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this minor, the students will be able to:

  1. understand some basics aspects of  language structure and use.
  2. be able to read simple descriptive analyses and reports concerning aspects of language structure for specific languages.
  3. describe some of the major ways in which languages differ from each other.
  4. be able to recognize some instances of important linguistic concepts in a language already known or being studied by the student.
  5. Evaluate some kinds of popular arguments concerning language use and the nature of language

Requirements

This minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must include:

6 units from the completion of the following compulsory course:

LING1001 – Introduction to the Study of Language (6 units)

 

A minimum of 6 units from completion of core courses from the following list:

LING2003 – Introduction to Syntax (6 units)

LING2008 – Semantics (6 units)

LING2010 – Phonetics: Sounds of the World’s Languages (6 units)

 

A maximum of 18 units from completion of 2000-3000-level courses in the subject area of LING - Linguistics or from the following list.

ASIA2103 –  Language in Asia (L) (6 units)

GERM2110 – Structure of German (6 units)

GERM2048 – Spoken Interaction in German: Theory and Practice (6 units)

INDN2101 – Linguistic aspects of Indonesian (6 units)

JPNS2007 – Japanese Linguistics (6 units)

JPNS2009 – Japanese Lexicon (6 units)

JPNS2019 – Japanese Phonetics and Phonology (6 units)

JPNS2024 – Japanese Grammar (6 units)

JPNS3011 – Language Variation and Change in the Japanese Archipelago (6 units)

LING1002 – Language and Society (6 units)

PASI2020 – Languages of the Pacific (6 units)

PHIL2016 – The Philosophy of Language (6 units)

PHIL2080 – Logic (6 units)
