Course Description

This course is an intensive academic and cultural debriefing for Year in Asia participants. Culturally, students will be encouraged to reflect upon and contextualise their experiences in relation to broader notions of multiculturalism, intercultural communication and cultural relativity. This component of the course will consist of seminar and workshop settings with guest speakers and culminate in cultural group presentations conducted on the final day of the course. Academically, students will work with academic staff to develop and refine research conducted in-country and will prepare a 10-15 minute English-language research presentation on that topic, to be conducted during a mini-conference on the final day of the course. Students will also submit a reflection journal in English within one week of the mini-conference.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Recognise and discuss the significance of various cultural and linguistic contexts on communication styles.
  2. Recognise and discuss the impact and role their own background and culturally embedded beliefs had on their ability to interact and communicate across cultures and languages.
  3. Communicate academic research in written and oral form.

All assessment items must be completed to a satisfactory level in order for students to receive a Course Requirement Satisfied (CRS) result in the course.
