Master of Molecular Genetic Analysis
Degree Structure
The degree structure of this program offers some capacity to tailor the program to meet the specific interests and needs of each student. For example, there is scope for students to specialise in one of the following:
- advanced population genetic analysis,
- advanced molecular epidemiology,
- advanced molecular evolution, phylogenetics and bioinformatics, or
- a combination of these and other fields.
The program will be delivered by a combination of traditional semester long lecture and practical courses, intensive workshop style courses, small group tutorial based courses and optional online courses.
In the first semester, satisfactory completion of all 4 units at distinction average or better (>70%) is required prior to undertaking the second semester courses.
Semester 1 (February to June)
Three compulsory courses are required:
- BIOL6004 Population Ecology (6 Units) - (lectures and practical classes) or BIOL6016 Population Genetics (6 Units)
- BIOL6006 Introductory Genetics (6 Units) - (lectures and practical classes)
- BIOL8211 Molecular Marker Technology 1 (6 Units) - (lectures and practical classes)
Electives:
- BIOL8212 Molecular Marker Technology 2 (6 Units) - Must be taken in conjunction with BIOL8211 (intensive workshop course)
- BIOL6016 Population Genetics (6 Units)
- BIOL6162 Molecular Biotechnology (6 Units)
- BIOL6142 General Microbiology (6 Units)

BIOL6161 Genes: Replication and Expression (6 Units) - (lectures and practical classes)
- BIOL6163 Genomics and its Applications (6 Units) - (lectures and practical classes)
Semester 2 (July to November)
Students must choose at least 18 units from the following (not all units may be offered each year):
- BIOL8221 Advanced Population Genetic Analysis 1 (6 Units) - (Intensive workshop course offered in July).
- BIOL8222 Advanced Population Genetics Analysis 2 (6 Units) - (Course offered from July). Must be taken in conjunction with BIOL8221.
- BIOL8231 Advanced Molecular Epidemiology 1 (6 Units) - (Intensive workshop course offered in August).
- BIOL8232 Advanced Molecular Epidemiology 2 (6 Units) - (Course offered from August). Must be taken in conjunction with BIOL8231.
- BIOL8241 Molecular Evolution and Bioinformatics 1 (6 Units) - (Intensive workshop course offered in September).
- BIOL8242 Molecular Evolution and Bioinformatics 2 (6 Units) - (Course offered from September- Possible to be taken online). Must be taken in conjunction with BIOL8241
Electives:
- BIOL8251 Research Skills (6 Units) - (Workshop course run over several weeks early in Semester 2) - not offered in 2010
- BIOL6243 Advanced Genetics and Bioinformatics (6 Units) - (lectures and practical classes). Incompatible with BIOL6241 and BIOL6242
- BIOL6005 Conservation Biology (6 Units) - (lectures and practical classes) - incompatible with BIOL8705
- BIOL8705 Challenges in Conservation Biology (6 Units) incompatible with BIOL6005
- BIOL6162 Molecular Biotechnology (6 Units) - (lectures and practical classes)
