Master of Commerce

Program Requirements

Students must pass and achieve a grade average of 70% across the first 48 units attempted to progress to the second year of the program or to any other 2 Year Masters program in the College. Students who fail to achieve this requirement will be transferred to the Master of Business program.

Candidates must complete 96 units, subject to the following rules:

  • Introductory courses: maximum of 24 units
  • Core courses: minimum of  12 units of core course
  • Advanced  electives courses, projects or research reports: minimum of 30 units,  including at least 6 units of project or research report.
  • Elective courses: remainder as required from specialisations to total 96 units.

Candidates who intend to apply for enrolment in a PhD are strongly advised to complete a research report (sub-thesis) of 24 units equivalent.

In the first year of candidature, students normally study introductory courses, basic electives and one or two core courses. Advanced electives, a project or research report and the remaining core courses are normally studied in the second year of candidature.

The program may combine intensive mode and semester length courses. Most 6 unit courses are taught in semester length mode. 3 unit courses are usually taught in intensive mode.

Introductory Courses (maximum of 24 units)

Introductory courses cover basic business skills. Students who have not previously studied in business-related areas will normally need to study introductory courses to satisfy pre-requisites for elective courses. Students who satisfy the pre-requisites for the elective studies of their choice are not required to enrol in any introductory level courses.

  • One of BUSN8013 Seminar in Research Method  or MGMT8006 Management Research Methods or STAT8010 Managing the Research Process
  • BUSN8018 Qualitative Research Methods

 

Projects and research reports (minimum of 6 units):

Candidates must complete one of:

BUSN8801 Commerce Research Report or MMIB8001 Applied Topics in Business Studies 1 [A] or MMIB8003 Special Research Topic 1 [R] (6 units)

OR
BUSN8802 Masters Research Project [A]or MMIB8002 Applied Topics in Business Studies 2 [A] or MMIB8004 Special Research Topic 2 [R] (12 units)

OR
BUSN8803 Masters Subthesis or MMIB8005 Master Sub-Thesis (Business) (18 units) [R]
OR
BUSN8804 Masters Subthesis or MMIB8006 Master Sub-Thesis (Business) (24 units) [R]

[A] Recommended for candidates more interested in applied studies.

[R] Recommended for candidates more interested in research training. Candidates contemplating a subthesis are advised to enrol in BUSN8013 or STAT8010 in their first year of candidature.

Candidates who intend to apply for enrolment in a PhD are strongly advised to complete a research report (sub-thesis) of 24 units equivalent.

Elective Courses(minimum of 30 units at Advanced Elective Level cumulative with project or research report)

Electives courses studied within the program are classified as either basic electives or advanced electives. Students must complete a minimum of 30 units comprised of advanced elective courses cumulative with project or research report. While there is no required number of basic electives which must be completed within the program, most advanced elective courses require prior completion of related basic electives. Basic electives are normally studied in the first year of candidature. Advanced electives are normally studied in the second year of candidature. 

Students who wish to specialise may choose a sequence of advanced elective courses from within the advanced disciplinary specialisations listed below. The courses listed under the advanced specialisations below are advanced electives.

A candidate who has not previously completed a course in introductory statistics should complete STAT7055 Financial Statistics before enrolling in any of these three courses. STudents must obtain an average mark of 70% to undertake the Advanced Finance Specialisation.
